Welsh is taught through a variety of teaching styles, and where possible it is developed through the whole curriculum to incorporate oral, reading and writing skills
Pupils at KS4 will be working towards a WJEC nationally recognised qualifications, being assessed in their reading, writing, listening and oracy skills through the Welsh language.
Aim of the Welsh Department
- Get the pupils to enjoy their Welsh lessons.
- Create a healthy and positive attitude for pupils towards the Welsh language.
- Get the pupils to enjoy speaking Welsh, as soon as possible, in formal and informal situations, in accordance with their abilities.
- Get the pupils to enjoy writing Welsh, in formal and informal situations, in accordance with their abilities.
- Get pupils to enjoy reading Welsh, in formal and informal situations, in accordance with their abilities.
- Get the pupils to enjoy watching and listening to the Welsh language, both in formal and informal situations, in accordance with their abilities.
- Create in pupils the confidence and belief that they are succeeding, or able to succeed, in Welsh.
- Introduce pupils to their heritage and their copyright of Welshness through:
- Music, television and radio
- Literature
- History
- Personal, immediate experiences
- Local and national events.
- Introduce pupils to a Welsh ethos and atmosphere through:
- The Eisteddfod - School, Urdd, Local/Special School
- Newspapers from the Borough
- School Assemblies
- Curriculum Cymreig
- Activities of the Urdd
- Provide suitable, supportive and stretching units of learning in line with pupils ' abilities.
- Provide suitable courses in line with pupils ' abilities, the requirements of the National Curriculum and the requirements of external work areas.
- Provide suitable and easy to understand assessment systems to review and act on pupil development.
- Prepare pupils, in accordance with their abilities, for the requirements of the National Curriculum and external courses and examinations.
- Promote a Welsh community and motivate pupils to communicate with each other through the medium of Welsh.
