In this key stage pupils follow a WJEC pathways qualification in Entry level 2 or 3. This unit aims to help learners to acquire the knowledge and skills to make a product of their own choosing. The assessment criteria states selecting appropriate materials for the chosen product and explaining their choice of materials. This could be hard woods such as Ash, Oak and Beech to soft wood such as MDF and Pine.
All pupils adhere to health and safety rules throughout the workshop sessions. A variety of machine tools are used such as Mitre saws, Band saws and planers. Other power hand tools are used such as orbital sanders and Pyrography pens.
Pupils are allowed to choose whatever they would like to make as the brief is quite open. Projects such as Acoustic guitars, LED lamps, tables and Storage units are made using high quality materials. Pupils identify some strengths and weakness of their product in their evaluation and will make suggestions for improvement.
